What to do before Washing your Clothes

Hi all,

Today I'd like to share with you some pointers on what to do before you dump your clothes into the washing machine.

1) Inspect the garment for any loose sewing points - under the top's armpit area and the pockets. Especially for fragile fabric, you will have to be extra careful. Simply throwing them into your washer with other garments may damage your clothes. Always wash like garments together. Your skirts should never be washed together with your towels and jeans, they may snag the skirt and make permanent damage.

2) Look out for any stains that needs to be removed first before washing - ink, blood, wine stains etc. Modern washers now have temperature control, if these garments go inside the washer at high temperature, the stains may become permanent. If this happens, say bye bye to your Armani t-shirts.

3) Wash your clothes as soon as they are soiled. Do not let the soil set on your clothes for too long - bacteria may flourish in a soiled environment and over time spots of fungus may appear and it may be too late to be removed.

4) The first reaction anybody would do when liquid drops onto your shirt is to go to the sink, put some soap and water on the stain and try to remove it. Well, unless you know what you're doing, do not tamper with stains if you have no clue on how remove them. Playing around with the stains may expand the surface area of the stains and may make it even harder to remove them. It is better to send to a pro who has all the tools at his disposal to clean the stains without damaging the fabric of your garment.

Detergent vs Softener

Hi all,

Many people think they know how to wash clothes. Well with modern living it is not that hard isn't it? Just buy a washing machine and put some detergent and some softener, washing machine starts spinning and when it stops, just dry all the clothes.

So what's the difference between detergents and softeners?

Detergent is a surfactant, meaning it reduces the surface tension of water. How do they do this? Detergents are hydrophilic ("likes water") and hydrophobic ("hates water"). This means it can react both with water and insolubles eg oil. With this it modifies the surface properties of the water - meaning it can carry insolubles from a fabric hence cleaning it.

Softeners are chemicals that coats the surface of a fabric. They are electrically conductive which prevents static electricity from increasing. Furthermore they have lubricant properties which make them feel really smooth. Now all these properties are good aren't they? Unfortunately the disadvantage of softener is that it decreases the water absorption properties of a fabric like towels. Due to this it is not recommended that towels be applied with softeners!

The good thing for you is that you don't have to do your own washing.

Don't leave your clothes in the Plastic Packaging!

Hi all,

Today I'm going to tell you a secret about the plastic packaging that cleaners wrap your clothes with.

What people don't know is that the plastic breaks down after some time and makes your clothes yellow, stained and makes the fabric break down and degenerate.

The colour changes is caused by an anti-oxidant from the plastic bag. When this material makes contact with other elements in the air and with water (minimal moisture usually is in the air), the reaction forms yellow compounds. This compound is yellow in colour and is passed onto your clothes.

Now when this happen, usually it becomes permanent. Quickly send your clothes to your cleaner. They might be able to help you to remove it.

If not, then "nasib". There's not much that can be done with the clothes any more.

So always always always take out your clothes from the plastic wrap and let them "breathe" naturally.
